The Symmetry feature lets you define a symmetry model. Specifically, it takes either all the bodies or selected bodies of the model as input and accepts up to three symmetry planes. You can choose either full or partial models to work with. If you use a full model, the selected symmetry planes slice off the model, retaining only a portion of it. The valid body types for this feature are surface and solid.
During the model transfer from ANSYS DesignModeler to the Mechanical application, Ansys groups the faces and edges coincident to the symmetry planes into a named selection whenever the Export Symmetry property is set to Yes. Additionally, it transfers each symmetry plane chosen in the Symmetry feature to the Mechanical application as a coordinate system.
Avoid changing the symmetry plane selection once you've transferred a model to the Mechanical application. The Mechanical application won't delete the previous symmetry planes during updating, either. The same note applies when you use the Named Selection feature.
Controlling the Symmetry Feature
The following properties allow you to control the behavior of the feature:
-
Number of Planes: This property defines how many symmetry planes the feature uses.
-
Symmetry Plane 1: First symmetry plane selection.
-
Symmetry Plane 2: Second symmetry plane selection.
-
Symmetry Plane 3: Third symmetry plane selection.
-
Model Type: This property specifies either Full Model or Partial Model as input.
Full Model: ANSYS DesignModeler will use the chosen symmetry planes to cut the full model, leaving only the symmetrical portion. For each symmetry plane, material on the positive side of the plane (that is, the +Z direction) is kept, while material on the negative side is cut away. Partial Model: Since the model has already been reduced to its symmetrical portion, there is no model change after the Symmetry feature is generated. However when the model is transferred from ANSYS DesignModeler to the Mechanical application, the faces and edges coincident with the symmetry planes will be identified automatically and put into a named selection if the Export Symmetry property is Yes. -
Target Bodies: This property specifies whether the feature encloses all the bodies in the model or only selected ones. The default is All Bodies.
-
Bodies: If Target Bodies is set to Selected Bodies, then this property becomes available. It is an Apply/Cancel button property that facilitates selection of the target bodies.
-
Export Symmetry: Determines whether symmetry plane data is transferred downstream to the Mechanical application. The default is Yes.

Ansys DesignModeler – Ansys Beta Options (Solid Extension)
By default, System Coupling’s beta features are not activated. When beta features are activated, the corresponding settings are added to the data model and are available for use.

The Connect feature may be used to align and possibly join a set of vertices, edges or faces. The alignment takes the form of a stretching and aligning of existing geometry.
Ansys DesignModeler – Mid-Surface
The Mid-Surface feature allows the creation of Surface bodies that are midway between existing Solid body faces. The resulting surface body/bodies have a Thickness property which defines the “thickness” that surface body represents.
Ansys DesignModeler – Enclosure
The Enclosure feature is a tool used to enclose the bodies of a model so that the material enclosing the bodies can be assigned to something such as a gas or fluid in the ANSYS Mechanical application.
Ansys DesignModeler – Pipes Y-Shaped/T-Shaped
The ANSYS DesignModeler application is designed to be used as a geometry editor of existing CAD models. The ANSYS DesignModeler application is a parametric feature-based solid modeler designed so that you can intuitively and quickly begin drawing 2D sketches, modeling 3D parts, or uploading 3D CAD models for engineering analysis preprocessing.
Ansys DesignModeler – Offset Surface
The Offset function allows you to create a set of lines and arcs that are offset by an equal distance from an existing set of “straight” lines and “circular” arcs. The original set of lines and arcs must be connected in a simple end-to-end fashion and can form either an open or closed profile.
Ansys DesignModeler – Slice
The Slice feature improves the usability of ANSYS DesignModeler as a tool to produce sweepable bodies for hex meshing and to assign different cross sections in a line body.
